The Evolution of Cancer Risk Assessment in the Era of Next Generation Sequencing

Abstract: Cancer genetics professionals face a new opportunity and challenge in adapting to the availability of cancer genetic testing panels, now available as a result of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technology. While cancer panels have been available for over a year, we believe that there is not yet enough data to create practice guidelines. Despite this, a year of experience allows us to provide our opinion on points to consider as cancer genetic counselors incorporate this testing technology into genetic counsel… Show more

“…Not all individuals wish to pursue testing and not all family and medical histories warrant testing. Genetic testing should be offered however, when the following conditions are met 3,8,11,16 : (1) the individual has a personal or family history suggestive of a hereditary cancer syndrome; (2) test results can be adequately interpreted; (3) test results will influence the medical management of the individual or their family members; and (4) testing is accompanied by informed consent.…”

“…The process of informed consent for genetic testing for inherited cancer susceptibility is well described 3,11,16,28 . In order for an individual to give fully informed consent for genetic testing, the following educational elements must be provided: (1) information on the specific gene(s) or gene mutations(s) being tested including a description of associated cancers and other potential health risks; (2) inheritance patterns associated with genes being tested.…”
