The evolution of city-scale GHG emissions inventory methods: A systematic review

Abstract: The capacity of cities to act on climate change mitigation is essential to fulfil the Paris Agreement target. In order to do so, cities should establish an effective climate policy which requires, as a first step, a complete greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory. The accurate city-scale GHG inventory enables cities to develop, implement and track climate solution measures, mainly those related to transportation. The compilation of a city-scale GHG inventory requires a standardized method and up-to-date acti… Show more

“… emission and climate change are attracting considerable interest in the related literature due to its impacts on the global environment and economic activities ( Cucchiella et al, 2020 ; Arioli et al, 2020 ). Financial development, which involves reducing information asymmetries and improving capital allocation, plays a critical role in economic development.…”

“…Building on previous work constructing a Hebei city-level MRIO table based on published city-level SRIO tables (Zheng, Meng, et al, 2019;Zheng, Zhang, et al, 2019) (Heinonen et al, 2020). Consumption-based emissions reflect transboundary emissions between cities, and capture carbon leakages (Arioli et al, 2020;Chen et al, 2017). We choose consumption-based emissions since computing this indicator requires a detailed and accurate MRIO table.…”

“…The GHG emission inventory is the critical step of GHG emission footprint calculation. For consumption-based accounting methods, the most effort has been the focus of the IPCC ( Krey et al., 2014 ), Input-Output Analysis (IOA) and the Life Cycle Assessment ( ISO, 2006 ) models ( Arioli et al., 2020 ), and most of the recent developments are based on these existing methods. Hybrid LCA methods have been applied for determining both production- and consumption-based GHG emissions ( Ibrahim et al., 2012 ).…”
