The evolution of intraspecific variation in social organization

Abstract: Many species show intraspecific variation in their social organization (IVSO), which means the composition of their social groups can change between solitary living, pair living, or living in groups. Understanding IVSO is important because it demonstrates species resilience to environmental change and can help us to study ultimate and proximate reasons for group living by comparing solitary and group‐living individuals in a single species. It has long been realized that the environment plays a key role in expl… Show more

“…Most of the available data concern social organization, since group composition is easy to measure. Social organization can be solitary living, pair-living or living in groups of different composition (Kappeler and Schaik 2002;Schradin et al 2018). Variation in social organization is obvious between different species.…”

“…Typically, only one form of social organization has been described for each species. However, we have long known that many species can have several forms of social organization (Lott 1984(Lott , 1991Maher and Burger 2011;Schradin et al 2018). While different mechanisms can theoretically lead to intra-specific variation in social organization (Schradin 2013), the most common one is social flexibility (Schradin et al 2018).…”

“…Genetic changes contribute to the evolution of different architectures of burrows, even between closely related species (like Peromyscus polionotus and P. maniculatus) [43,44]. Novel observations suggest that social organization in rodents is influenced by changing environmental conditions [45,46]. Our hypothesis is that Gregorymys individuals in Yolomecatl could have some degree of social organization in environments triggered by aridity conditions.…”

“…Our framework can therefore investigate species that show intraspecific variation in their social systems (Schradin, Hayes, Pillay, & Bertelsmeier, 2018). These dimensions emerged from extensively reviewing literature and gathering input from researchers studying various taxonomic groups of mammals.…”
