The evolution of the terrestrial‐terminating Irish Sea glacier during the last glaciation

Abstract: Here we reconstruct the last advance to maximum limits and retreat of the Irish Sea Glacier (ISG), the only land‐terminating ice lobe of the western British Irish Ice Sheet. A series of reverse bedrock slopes rendered proglacial lakes endemic, forming time‐transgressive moraine‐ and bedrock‐dammed basins that evolved with ice marginal retreat. Combining, for the first time on glacial sediments, optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) bleaching profiles for cobbles with single grain and small aliquot OSL measur… Show more

“…The glacial depositional context of the Seisdon Sand leads to a high probability of partial re-setting of the luminescence signal during deposition [ 124 , 125 ]. The site also underwent post-depositional deformation and tilting during subsequent late Devensian glaciation ( ca MIS 2) [ 126 ]. FMM analysis of the dim quartz OSL results showed multiple D e components for both samples, suggesting incomplete bleaching or disturbance.…”

“…2018; Chiverrell et al . 2021). However, in general the measurement of the OSL signal from quartz for small aliquots and single grains has been successful across large parts of the BIIS and provided 156 ages to anchor key stages in the dynamic record of the ice sheet.…”
