The Evolution of the Wave‐One Ozone Maximum During the 2017 LASIC Field Campaign at Ascension Island

Abstract

The Wave One Ozone Maximum (WOOM) was identified nearly three decades ago and represented the largest tropospheric ozone signal in the tropics (Fishman et al., 1991;Thompson et al., 2003). Biomass burning, lightning, and the long-range transport from South America and Africa to South Tropical Atlantic (STA) Ocean are thought to contribute to the wave-one ozone maximum during September, October, and November (SON) across the STA (Jenkins et al., 1997). Biomass burning leads to the emission of hydrocarbons and nonmethane hydrocarbons and consequently the production of ozone near the fires (Crutzen & Andreae, 1990).
