Although landfill leachate is a small volumetric fraction compared to municipal wastewater, its complexity raises concerns for researchers and practitioners. Emerging and novel treatment technologies are being investigated to address landfill leachate treatment challenges. In the past decade, leachate research shifted from the removal of contaminants to the simultaneous recovery of resources and removal of contaminants. While resource recovery is appealing, it is also questionable due to the economic feasibility and post-environmental impact of applied resources. Various emerging contaminants may remain in recovered resources, making recovery a less preferred option. Because of the ineffectiveness of biological treatment of emerging contaminants, such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, leachate cotreatment has been restricted in some wastewater treatment plants. Thus, in the wake of emerging contaminants and stringent regulations, it seems wiser to develop effective, integrated leachate treatments in lieu of widely practiced biological cotreatment. The solid waste industry needs viable, cost-efficient, and readily executable technologies to effectively handle the upcoming need. Thus, in this paper, academic and industry experts discuss the progress, challenges, and future of leachate treatment. This paper provides a forward-thinking evaluation of the past decade’s advancements and challenges in the field of landfill leachate treatment.

The use of radio frequency for water and wastewater treatment is a topic that has not been extensively explored. In this study, the effect of a HydroFlow S38 device (Hydropath Holdigs) inducing 150 KHz radio frequency (RF) has been investigated, removing color, forming coagulant flocs and their sedimentation, and the removal of bacteria. Experiments were first conducted on synthetic samples, and then on landfill leachate from the Aradkooh waste processing and landfilling complex (Kahrizak) in Tehran, Iran. The results of the experiments showed that RF had little to no effect on de-coloring in the absence or presence of sodium hypochlorite. Also, the coagulation and flocculation of ferric chloride remained unaffected. However, the use of RF was shown to reduce the number of bacteria significantly. The inductance of RF alone, without any other aid or chemical/physical treatment, was able to reduce the bacterial count by 35%. These findings provide motivation for future research regarding the use of RF for bacteria inactivation.

The study on the fate and transport of Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products, PPCPs (FTP) in the environment, has received particular attention for over two decades. The PPCPs threaten ecology and human health even at low concentrations due to their synergistic effects and long-range transport. The research aims to provide an inclusive map of the scientific background of FTP research over the last 25 years, from 1996 to 2020, to identify the main characteristics, evolution, salient research themes, trends, and research hotspots in the field of interest. Bibliometric networks were synthesized and analyzed for 577 journal articles extracted from the Scopus database. Consequently, seven major themes of FTP research were identified as follows: (i) PPCPs category; (ii) hazardous effects; (iii) occurrence of PPCPs; (iv) PPCPs in organisms; (v) remediation; (vi) FTP-governing processes; and (vii) assessment in the environment. The themes gave an in-depth picture of the sources of PPCPs and their transport and fate processes in the environment, which originated from sewage treatment plants and transported further to sediment/soils/groundwater/oceans that act as the PPCPs’ major sink. The article provided a rigorous analysis of the research landscape in the FTP study conducted during the specified years. The prominent research themes, content analysis, and research hotspots identified in the study may serve as the basis of real-time guidance to lead future research areas and a prior review for policymakers and practitioners.
