The Experience Sampling Method ‐ a new digital tool for momentary symptom assessment in IBS: an exploratory study

Abstract: IBS patients report higher scores for abdominal pain in retrospective questionnaires compared to ESM, with a tendency to report peak rather than average pain scores. ESM can provide more insight in symptom course and potential triggers, and may lead to a better understanding of IBS symptomatology.

“…The ESM procedure allows for patient-reported outcome measures that index adaptive daily life functioning, avoiding potentially biased data collection methods based on clinical interviews conducted by the treating therapist. Self-reports of mental states can have their own biases; the ESM sampling procedure is designed to avoid these risks, which may be especially advantageous in general hospital patients with somatic complaints due to underlying mental conditions [38, 39]. …”

“…Recall bias may play a role in reporting of symptom severity (22), and comorbid conditions could potentially influence recall of symptom severity (22). The cross-sectional nature of the study clearly does not allow for the investigation of causal relationships, and the analyses do not allow one to entirely separate the influences of symptom severity and IBS diagnosis.…”

“…The development of the questions to be used in “Uromate”, started with an initial draft based on a theoretical framework from the literature . Items concerning social factors, contextual, and environmental factors and psychological status following the ESM specific construct, were derived from questions used in previous ESM validation studies . A specific list of questions that incorporated urological complaints like urgency and frequency were compiled by our research team.…”

“…The device sends an auditory signal (“beep”) every time the questionnaire can be completed. Each questionnaire should be filled out during the 10 following minutes after the beep to guarantee momentary assessment . Preferably, completion of ≥6 momentary repeated questionnaires a day should be achieved in order to consider the patient as compliant .…”
