The explanatory power of citations: a new approach to unpacking impact in science

Abstract: Citation analysis has been applied to map the landscape of scientific disciplines and to assess the impact of publications. However, it is limited in that it assumes all citations to be of equal weight. Doing away with this assumption could make such studies even more insightful. Current developments in this regard focus on the evaluation of the syntactic and semantic qualities of the text that surrounds citations. Still lacking, however, are computational techniques to unpack the thematic context in which cit… Show more

“…Often, each citation of an article is considered to be of equal value (Mettler & Ballester, 2021;Rüdiger et al, 2021). In recent years, doubts about this view and the mere consideration of an article's citation count have been raised (e.g., Mettler & Ballester, 2021;Rüdiger et al, 2021). Instead, it is suggested that the citation type be considered in more detail.…”

“…They can also make extensive use of self-citations (Kacem et al, 2020;Nightingale & Marshall, 2012;Szomszor et al, 2020). Moreover, when using citation metrics as a measure of research performance, the type of citations and the number of citations in one paper are rarely considered (Rüdiger et al, 2021). Whether a paper is cited as a simple example of the findings of the citing paper does not imply the same research impact as if it is cited as a seminal paper (Liu et al, 2014;Wan & Liu, 2014a;Zhao & Strotmann, 2016).…”
