The External Interface for Extending WASP

Abstract: Answer set programming (ASP) is a successful declarative formalism for knowledge representation and reasoning. The evaluation of ASP programs is nowadays based on the Conflict-Driven Clause Learning (CDCL) backtracking search algorithm. Recent work suggested that the performance of CDCL-based implementations can be considerably improved on specific benchmarks by extending their solving capabilities with custom heuristics and propagators. However, embedding such algorithms into existing systems requires expert … Show more

“…Furthermore, it offers the integration of computable functions, similar to the mechanism (using terms preceded by '@') sketched at the beginning of Section 4. Unlike this, a full-fledged Python API is offered by the ASP solver wasp (Dodaro and Ricca 2020). This has interesting applications to heuristic control and propagators for integrity constraints (Dodaro et al .…”

“…The experience above calls for the need of some extra features of ASP systems, for example, extending their solving capabilities with custom heuristics and propagators; some work in this direction is currently ongoing (see (Dodaro and Ricca 2018) and references therein). However, the applicability of these approaches in our context is not straightforward.…”

“…Other approaches are related to the use of methods that "guide" the reasoning, the generation of logic programs, or other optimizations (Law et al 2015(Law et al , 2016Chabierski et al 2017;Dodaro and Ricca 2018); most of them are still at a preliminary stage.…”
