“…Since HTC0 4 is a strong acid [15], it might be expected to behave like other strong acids, especially strong oxyacids, when interacting with TBP. However, while there is evidence for 1 : 2 and 2 : 1 TBP : HA complexes containing varying numbers of H 2 0 molecules [16,17], most of the acids that have been studied form 1 : 1 complexes with TBP under most conditions. A solvation number of three appears to be most unusual.…”

“…The possibility of coextraction of hydrochloric acid by tri-n-butyl phosphate to the organic phase, can be neglected in the concentration range studied [10]. According to Naïto and Suzuki [10] and Hesford and McKay [11] the sequence of extractability of proton acids for mineral acids by TBP is: HF = HClO 4 > HNO 3 > H 3 PO 4 > HCl > H 2 SO 4 . This was confirmed by the chloride ion analysis, of the aqueous phase, using Volhard's method.…”

“…Previous studies, however, have shown that water extraction does not play a major role in TBP-HNO 3 systems. [23,24] …”
