The Failure Mechanism of Composite Stiffener Components Reinforced with 3D Woven Fabrics

Abstract: Composite industry has long been seeking practical solutions to boost laminate through-thickness strengths and interlaminar shear strengths (ILSS), so that composite primary structures, such as stiffeners, can bear higher complex loadings and be more delamination resistant. Three dimensional (3D) woven fabrics were normally employed to render higher transverse and shear strengths, but the difficulty and high expense in producing such fabrics make it a hard choice. Based on a novel idea that the warp yarns that… Show more

“…Because of the superior chemical and physical properties such as high mechanical strength, 1,2 corrosion resistance 3 and electrical insulation, 4 easy processability, 5 and low cost, 6 unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) has been widely utilized in many field including transportation, 7,8 electrical equipment, 9 and building construction 10 in recent decades. Generally, dihydric alcohol, dicarboxylic anhydrides and/or dicarboxylic acid are reacted to obtain UPR oligomers via melt polycondensation, then the oligomers are copolymerized with the high content of styrene (ca.…”

“…Then, seven corresponding circular holes are found in the point cloud model, and their center coordinates are extracted. The Euclidean distance between the center of the circle is used to investigate the deformation of the helmets: (1) where the d refers to the distance between any two points in three dimensional coordinate like point 1 (x1, y1, z1) and point 2 (x2, y2, z2).…”

“…Since the fiber reinforced composites have excellent fatigue resistance, high strength-to-weight and stiffness-to-weight ratios, they have been widely employed in various fields [1][2][3]. As one of the structures in composite engineering, thin shell structure is commonly used in advanced equipment, such as helmet, oxygen mask and unmanned aerial vehicle, etc.…”

“…Epoxy resins, well-known thermosetting polymers, have been extensively used as versatile coatings and adhesives due to their promising features such as corrosion resistance, appropriate mechanical strength, chemical stability, and desirable adhesion to different surfaces/substrates [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]. However, achieving high mechanical properties and the thermal stability of thermosetting epoxy for high performance coatings has been a matter of controversy [ 4 , 5 ].…”
