The Fate of Amoco Cadiz Oil

Abstract: The Amoco Cadiz oil spill (223,000 metric tons) of March 1978 is the largest and best studied tanker spill in history. Of the total oil lost, 30,000 tons (13.5 percent) rapidly became incorporated into the water column, 18,000 tons (8 percent) were deposited in subtidal sediments, 62,000 tons (28 percent) washed into the intertidal zone, and 67,000 tons (30 percent) evaporated. While still at sea, approximately 10,000 tons of oil were degraded microbiologically. After 3 years, the most obvious effects of the s… Show more

“…The highest concentration of C 13 was found as 257 µg L −1 at 5 cm at the northern side of the Sowarighat and the lowest value found was 0.24 µg L −1 for C 22 and C 14 components at 5 and 25 cm at the southern side of Postogolla and Sowarighat, respectively. Concentrations of remaining NSH components fell between these values at different depths, locations and stations.…”

“…Alternatively, these PAH may be degraded, or biodegraded to other constituents, so reducing the concentration of PAH. 22 Depletion may continue over weeks and months through dissolution, biodegradation and photo-oxidation, which further reduce the concentration of the resolved components.…”

“…Accidental spills coat the shoreline with oil leading to immediate impacts [2,3] whereas responses are more subtle and less known in subtidal habitats, though, the effects may last up to 20 years after the spill [4,5]. The recent drastic spills indicate that oil combat management has failed to achieve environmental sustainability partly because of insufficient generic understanding of how spills impact nearshore biota on another side.…”

“…It is reported that interest in containment of marine oil spill gained importance following the Amoco Cadiz oil spill in 1978. Also for the first time, it became clear that biodegradation of hydrocarbons plays a major role in natural oil removal 4 .…”
