The Finnish National Seismic Network: Toward Fully Automated Analysis of Low-Magnitude Seismic Events

Abstract: We present an overview of the seismic networks, products, and services in Finland, northern Europe, and the challenges and opportunities associated with the unique combination of prevailing crystalline bedrock, low natural intraplate seismic background activity, and a high level of anthropogenic seismicity. We introduce national and local seismic networks, explain the databases, analysis tools, and data management concepts, outline the Finnish macroseismic service, and showcase data from the 2017 M 3.3 Liminka… Show more

“…Stations operated by ISUH include the three Finnish National Seismic Network (FNSN) broadband stations MEF, NUR, PVF (black circles in Fig. 1) [Veikkolainen et al, 2021a], five broadband stations HEL1 to HEL5 deployed in 2016 and 2017 to monitor the seismicity associated with the reservoir development, and three new broadband stations KUNI, LAUT, VUOS (dark blue circles in Fig. 1) of the HelsinkiNet that were commissioned in 2019 and 2020 by the City of Helsinki for monitoring purposes.…”

“…These permanent broadband stations are together referred to as the HE subnetwork in Table 1 and in Figure 3. They are powered by the electric grid and data transmission is continuous [Veikkolainen et al, 2021a].…”

“…Although the low frequency results are less well constrained due to the smaller number of sufficiently large earthquakes, the here observed overall strong frequency dependence suggests a systematic change in the governing relaxation processes across the range of wavelength scales. The significance of these results will benefit from complementary studies of other earthquake sequences in similar environments, for example, in the Rapakivi granite area in southeastern Finland (Luhta et al., 2022), and from a comprehensive analysis of the seismicity across the Fennoscandian Shield (Veikkolainen et al., 2021). Considerable depth dependent variations of Qi1 ${Q}_{\mathrm{i}}^{-1}$ have been estimated using the borehole data from Sweden (Line et al., 1998) using frequencies up to 200 Hz.…”

“…This focus is now widened by an increased interest in geothermal energy production. The data collected in this context can inform common practice (Fülöp et al., 2020), which assumes neutral spectral acceleration amplification at the locations of the broadband stations of the Finnish National Seismic Network or a regional network extension (Kortström et al., 2018; Veikkolainen et al., 2021). These are typically quality installations at surface hard rock sites, which means all installations are considered to be of reference very hard rock site quality.…”
