The First Case of Omental Metastasis from Primary Choroidal Melanoma

Abstract: Choroidal melanoma is the most common intraocular malignancy and can be fatal in half of the patients because of metastatic disease. Metastasis of choroidal melanoma to the omentum is extremely rare and, to our knowledge, no such case has ever been described in the literature. Here we present a 41-year-old Chinese man with an omental metastasis, 5 years after he was diagnosed with a spindle-cell-type malignant melanoma of the choroid and had his left eye enucleated. The patient demonstrated some uncommon sympt… Show more

“…Malignant melanoma, depending on the localization, invades the environment, by spreading through lymphatics and hematogenously. Metastatic melanoma of the forehead skin and the eye presented in our patients most likely originates from hematogenous dissemination, as evidenced by angioinvasion stromal metastases, as pointed out by other authors (21)(22)(23)(24)(25)(26).…”

“…Limited burden of disease do best with surgical treatment. Cases of omental metastases of melanoma are extremely unusual in the literature [10], [11], [12]. Either complete surgical resection or chemotherapy should be chosen as option treatments in such uncommon patients.…”

“…Although, melanoma is a tumor with a behavior that is not always predictable, there have been very few reports published of melanoma metastasizing to rectus abdominis muscle [7], [8], [9], and fewer publications of melanoma metastasizing to the omentum, which is an extremely rare site for metastasis [10], [11], [12]. As the condition is so rare, there is no consensus on the best treatment and proper chemotherapy [13].…”
