The first century of microwaves-1886 to 1986

Abstract. Nanoantennas for visible and infrared radiation can strongly enhance the interaction of light with nanoscale matter by their ability to efficiently link propagating and spatially localized optical fields. This ability unlocks an enormous potential for applications ranging from nanoscale optical microscopy and spectroscopy over solar energy conversion, integrated optical nanocircuitry, opto-electronics and density-ofstates engineering to ultra-sensing as well as enhancement of optical nonlinearities. Here we review the current understanding of metallic optical antennas based on the background of both well-developed radiowave antenna engineering and plasmonics. In particular, we discuss the role of plasmonic resonances on the performance of nanoantennas and address the influence of geometrical parameters imposed by nanofabrication. Finally, we give a brief account of the current status of the field and the major established and emerging lines of investigation in this vivid area of research.

Over the past decade, extensive research work in the field of Ultra Wideband(UWB) technology has given fascinating results in many applications. Initially UWB was developed as a military tool but recently it has been applied in consumer electronics and communication as well as in medical imaging. To implement this technology, it is required to generate subnanosecond pulses. At the beginning it was generated by spark gap techniques, but over time the pulse generation technique has changed. Recently, Step Recovery Diode (SRD) and Microwave transistors are widely used for the generation of UWB subnanosecond pulses. This paper present review of the principles of generation of UWB subnanosecond pulses.

Radio‐frequency identification (RFID) systems with ‘peel‐and‐stick’ labels are currently limited to tracking items with nearly electromagnetically transparent material properties. This limitation stems from the antenna choice for these labels – a dipole variant. A ground plane edge treatment along with a feed slot with unique tuning capabilities is investigated as an alternative RFID antenna option. Ease of fabrication was maintained as a priority in all design decisions. The measured antenna displays true placement insensitivity with a constant impedance when attached to metal, lossy dielectric, or electromagnetically‐transparent objects.
