The First Human Laparoscopy and NOTES Operation: Dimitrij Oscarovic Ott (1855-1929)

Abstract: Dimitrij Oscarovic Ott (1855-1929) can undoubtedly be called the true pioneer of laparoscopy, especially of natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery. In 1901 already he performed abdominal examinations via a transvaginal access calling this procedure ‘ventroscopy'. In 1902 the publication of his first results, as well as a description of the method and the equipment used, were released. In addition to Georg Kelling (1866-1945) and Hans Christian Jacobaeus (1879-1937), he therefore was one of the pioneer… Show more

“…The first laparoscopic procedure in humans was performed in the early 1900s[7] and has since soared in popularity, conferring many benefits, such as smaller surgical scars, reduced blood loss,[8] less pain[9] and faster recovery times, leading to shortened hospital stays. It also allows patients to avoid the increased morbidity of the traditional open laparotomy.…”

“…5 The little known Russian gynaecologist Dmitrij Oscarovic Ott (1855Ott ( -1929 performed numerous diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures, which were the forerunners of both laparoscopic abdominal surgery and Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery. 6 He used a completely different approach from his European contemporaries, namely ventroscopy. The patient was placed in an extreme Trendelenburg position under general anaesthetic and the vagina incised such that two speculae could be inserted to open the incision.…”

“…Before the introduction of laparoscopic techniques as a treatment option in various human pathologies, a large number of experimental interventions were performed on animals. Georg Kelling was the promoter of this learning technique, most of his experimental studies being performed on dogs [4]. The first laparoscopic intervention was performed on a human in 1910 by Hans Christian Jacobaeus and consisted of a "laparothoracoscopy" [5].…”
