Large numbers of new taxa are described annually and while there is a great need to make them identifiable, there seems little consistency in how this might be facilitated. I surveyed 427 papers published in 2021 and 2022, which described 587 new insect genera. I found that only 136 of the papers included keys, and these allowed the identification of 233 of the new genera 31.9% of papers and 39.7% of the new genera). The proportion of papers that included a key varied significantly among insect orders but not among the handful of journals wherein the bulk of the new genera were described. Overall, for 17 key-related variables assessed in a binary fashion (optimal vs suboptimal), the average key had almost six criteria that were scored as being suboptimal. For example, less than one-fifth facilitated retracing and less than 12% had illustrated keys where the images were conveniently located close to the relevant key couplets. Progress towards confirming a putative identification was possible in all papers, through the inclusion of a diagnosis, habitus images or both. Based upon this analysis, and expanding on previous suggestions for key construction, I make 23 recommendations on how to make an identification key maximally useful for users and indicate the relative ease with which each could be adhered to. I suggest that identification keys should accompany all new taxon descriptions, that guidelines for effective key construction be added to journals’ instructions to authors, that editors and reviewers should check keys carefully and that publishers should be attentive to the needs of users through, for example, permitting duplication of images to make keys easier to use. My recommendations are likely relevant to all levels in the taxonomic hierarchy for all organisms, despite the data being derived from generic-level keys for insects.

Although the species richness of Stratiomyidae (Diptera) in Brazil (~340 species) is one of the highest for the family worldwide, we still do not know the actual number of species, the extent of their distribution, or the species seasonal dynamics for a single area in the Neotropics. The soldier fly fauna in the semideciduous seasonal forests, which cover a major area of the countryside of the state of São Paulo, is poorly known compared to the best-known areas in the Atlantic Forest for stratiomyids, such as the ombrophilous forests on the southeast coast. With the constant habitat fragmentation of the remnants of the semideciduous forests in the state for crops and pastures for cattle, we are losing valuable data about biodiversity. This study details the stratiomyids for a single area in the Neotropical Region, using a standardized collecting methodology with Malaise traps, from May 2010 to December 2011. Here, we provide a list of 41 stratiomyid species and 25 genera in eight subfamilies from a total of 1,533 specimens collected in the Reserva Biológica e Ecológica Augusto Ruschi, Sertãozinho, Brazil. The current number of species/morphospecies reported for the state of São Paulo is raised to 113, with Merosargus golbachi James, 1971in James and McFadden, 1971 and M. tripartitus James, 1971in James and McFadden, 1971 reported for the first time to Brazil. Our analyses estimate even higher richness in the studied area, probably between 48 to 114 species, indicating that further collection efforts are needed.

Six new or noteworthy records of Angiosperms from Colombia are presented based in herbarium specimens from the Chocó department in Colombia. Four are first records for the country, one is the first record for the Chocó department and one is the most recent record after 28 years of an endemic species to the Chocó Biogeographical region in Colombia. Cynometra dwyerii (Fabaceae), Pouteria fossicola (Sapotaceae) and Tachigali panamensis (Fabaceae) were heretofore known as restricted to Central America; Mosquitoxylum jamaicense (Anacardiaceae) was previously known from Central America, Caribbean and Ecuador, but no record for Colombia had been found; Casearia thamnia (Salicaceae) was recorded from Colombia through a specimen of the year 1916 from the Bolivar department, here its first record from the Chocó department is presented; Cremastosperma chococola (Annonaceae) is a endemic species to the biogeographic Chocó in Colombia, only known through three specimens and not collected since the year 1990. Information about protologue, type specimens, distinctive morphology, current geographical distribution, common names, and uses are provided for each record, besides notes about the relevance of the novel records are here presented. A geographical distribution map for these species in Colombia is presented, as well as digital plates composed by photographs of herbarium vouchers. Continue inventoring the biodiversity in the biogeographic Chocó as one of the global biodiversity hotspots is imperative. These records presented here provide useful information for future biological research and conservation actions for their respective species or their habitats.
