The First Positive Detection of Molecular Gas in a GRB Host Galaxy

Abstract: We report on strong H 2 and CO absorption from gas within the host galaxy of gamma-ray burst (GRB) 080607. Analysis of our Keck/LRIS afterglow spectrum reveals a very large H I column density (N H I = 10 22.70±0.15 cm −2 ) and strong metal-line absorption at z GRB = 3.0363 with a roughly solar metallicity. We detect a series of A − X bandheads from CO and estimate N (CO) = 10 16.5±0.3 cm −2 and T CO ex > 100 K. We argue that the high excitation temperature results from UV pumping of the CO gas by the GRB after… Show more

“…The simultaneous presence of the 2175Å bump and molecular gas (H 2 and CO) has been reported in a few absorbers (Noterdaeme et al 2009;Prochaska et al 2009;Ma et al 2015;Noterdaeme et al 2017). In searching for H 2 in DLAs, high metallicity is an important criterion given the correlation between metallicity and the depletion of metals onto dust grains, i.e., larger amount of H 2 is expected in higher metallicity DLAs which contain more dust (Ge & Bechtold 1997;Ge, Bechtold, & Kulkarni 2001;Petitjean et al 2006;Noterdaeme et al 2008).…”

“…Along with the 2175Å bump, 2DAs are found to simultaneously harbor cold neutral (C i, H i, Cl i) and/or molecular (CO and H 2 ) gas (Elíasdóttir et al 2009;Noterdaeme et al 2009;Prochaska et al 2009;Ledoux et al 2015;Ma et al 2015), which may serve as reservoirs for star formation in the host galaxies. A systematic search for C i absorbers by Ledoux et al (2015) shows that the 2175Å bump is present in ∼ 30% of the C i absorbers.…”

“…Savaglio et al 2012;Krühler et al 2012), this places the host of GRB 080517 towards the upper end of the metallicity distribution for GRB hosts. Interestingly, at least two other high metallicity bursts, GRB 020819 and GRB 080607 (Prochaska et al 2009), are dark bursts.…”

“…However, this does not mean that such systems do not exist and an anti-correlation between absorber dust content and afterglow optical brightness should be checked. Indeed, the associated extinction will be high in these systems (Vladilo & Péroux 2005; see also Prochaska et al 2009) and their observation with high-resolution spectrographs, even with the advantage of fast response, possibly difficult. This is consistent with the findings of multi-colour photometry that a large fraction of bursts are dark because of high dust extinction in their hosts (Rol et al 2007;Jaunsen et al 2008;Tanvir et al 2008;Cenko et al 2009).…”
