The fish community as an indicator of biotic integrity of the streams in the Sinos River basin, Brazil

Abstract: The basin of the Sinos River, located in the northeastern part of Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil, has been highly impacted by industrial and urban activities. Water quality is low because of domestic and industrial sewage discharges. Most of the tributaries have suffered drastic structural interventions like canalisations and the removal of riparian vegetation. The aims of this study were to: 1) assess the diversity of fish at 34 sampling sites in twenty-four tributaries of the Sinos River basin; 2) quantify … Show more

“…Hughes and Whittier (2005) mentioned that native species represent the basic building blocks of a fish assemblage, and are a key component of diversity and the exotic species indicate biological pollution and a serious diversion from natural conditions, especially when they constitute a substantial percentage of the assemblage, and including when they are deliberately introduced. The extremely tolerant species are the last to disappear in response do environmental degradation (Costa and Schulz 2010). Researchers have commonly observed habitat degradation facilitating the underlying mechanisms causing the loss of native fish diversity, the temporal replacement of specialized native fish by exotic fish (Scott and Helfman, 2001;Olden and Poff, 2003;Parks, et al, 2014).…”

“…Several authors agree that the ABC analysis should be used in combination with other methods to access quality of aquatic environments, but this index was applied in Brazilian inland waters (PINTO et al, 2006;FREIRE, 2009;TEJERINA-GARRO, 2010) as well as in coastal estuarine systems (FALCÃO et al, 2008, OTERO et al, 2006, DIAS et al, 2011. Other indices as the Index of Biotic Integrity -IBI (KARR, 1981) were applied in inland waters (PINTO et al, 2006a, b;ARAÚJO, 2007;SCHULZ, 2010). A combination of two indicators was preformed only by SOARES et al (2011) in different impacted tidal creeks of an estuarine area in northern Brazil, and their results indicate that the ecological indices applied reflect the environmental quality and environmental changes in this coastal system.…”

“…In Brazil, most efforts to validate metrics extracted from fish assemblages have been concentrated in regions with high densities of humam populations, such as those in the south and southeast Brazil (e.g., Araújo et al 2003, Casatti et al 2009and Costa and Schulz 2010. This asymmetry highlights the need to validate these metrics for other regions, such as the Cerrado (e.g.…”
