The fitness consequences of wildlife conservation translocations: a meta‐analysis

Iwo P. Gross,
Alan E. Wilson,
Matthew E. Wolak

Abstract: Conservation translocation is a common strategy to offset mounting rates of population declines through the transfer of captive‐ or wild‐origin organisms into areas where conspecific populations are imperilled or completely extirpated. Translocations that supplement existing populations are referred to as reinforcements and can be conducted using captive‐origin animals [ex situ reinforcement (ESR)] or wild‐origin animals without any captive ancestry [in situ reinforcement (ISR)]. These programs have been criti… Show more

“…Over the years, captive breeding, translocation, and reintroduction have proven to be effective strategies in safeguarding endangered wildlife, rendering substantial contributions to the realm of wildlife conservation endeavors (Harding et al, 2016 ; Gross et al, 2023 ; Smith et al, 2023 ). Nonetheless, as summarized in our editorial in the first volume at 2021, the environmental changes resulting from different conservation strategies pose challenges to the ecological adaptability of the host species (Zhu et al, 2021b ).…”
