The Five-pointed Star

Abstract: The construction technique for inscribing a five-pointed star in a circle is practically equivalent to that for inscribing a pentagon, which is fairly well known. The proof involves a rather striking combination of geometric, algebraic, and trigonometric thought. For this reason the topic of the five-pointed star can be an excellent enrichment exercise for eleventh- or twelfth-grade mathematics students.
