The FL-system: a functional L-system for procedural geometric modeling

FL-systems are conditional rewriting systems. They are used for programming (describing) and evaluating (generating) huge 3D virtual environments, such as cities and forests. This paper presents a formal semantics and a dynamic dependency analysis for FL-systems. This analysis allows the characterization of a set of terms which are joinable with the currently rewritten term. Consequently, it is possible to speed up the rewriting steps of the environments generation by using a cache mechanism which is smarter than standard ones. This work can be seen as a dynamic completion of a set of rewriting rules. This completion increases the number of terms which are rewritten in normal form by the application of a single rewriting rule.

Within training, scenario creation can be a long and costly activity. This often results in the same scenarios being re-used. While this can work with new trainees, it does not provide effective training for those using a system for continuing training. In order to provide an easier capability for instruction, the authors are pursuing a line of research in scenario generation. While this includes methods for instructors to build scenarios easily via a manual process, automated approaches for scenario generation are also being investigated.The authors have previously completed efforts in reviewing the needs of a scenario generation system (Martin et al., 2009) and in building a conceptual model for scenarios and how varying complexity can be achieved. This paper provides a review of this work and then presents a computational approach to automated scenario generation. The authors are pursuing research investigating processes and tools for scenario generation, both manual and automated.A recently re-discovered approach (Shape Grammars) and a newly-developed approach (Functional L-systems) each shows great promise for their use in automated scenario generation. However, based on their additional expressive power, the authors have chosen to use Functional L-systems within their software, which will be reviewed.

We present an interactive procedural modeling system for the exterior of architectural models. Our modeling system is based on procedural extrusions of building footprints. The main novelty of our work is that we can model difficult architectural surfaces in a procedural framework, e.g. curved roofs, overhanging roofs, dormer windows, interior dormer windows, roof constructions with vertical walls, buttresses, chimneys, bay windows, columns, pilasters, and alcoves. We present a user interface to interactively specify procedural extrusions, a sweep plane algorithm to compute a two-manifold architectural surface, and applications to architectural modeling.
