The Follicle-Stimulating and Interstitial Cell-Stimulating Activities of Pregnant Mare Serum Gonadotrophin Compared With Those of Other Gonadotrophins

Abstract

An important effect on the ovaries of hypophysectomized rats after high doses of pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin (PMSG) is follicular development. Even though this action is combined with distinct interstitial cell stimulation (Cole, Pencharz & Goss, 1940), PMSG has been used as a follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) preparation in gynaecology and andrology for many years. D\l=o"\rner & Hohlweg (1961), however, failed to demonstrate synergism between PMSG and human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG) on the ovary of rats, comparable to that obtainable with hypophysial FSH + HCG, but they found a marked synergism between PMSG and FSH. These findings suggested a predominantly interstitial cell-stimulating activity of PMSG.

“…Since interstitial tissues of testis were markedly stimulated by the treatment of HCG or PMS without any other change, an increase in testes weight following the administration of HCG or PMS may be attributed to an increase in interstitial tissue . Considering the fact that HCG (Drescher , 1954) or PMS (Schmidt-Elmendorf et al, 1962;DOrner and Gotz, 1967) involves both ICSH-and FSH-activities, it is concluded that the testes of newborn rats responds only to ICSH-action , resulting in an increase in interstitial tissue . Histological examination showed no appreciable findings in the accessory organs .…”

The Follicular Phase Stimulated by Human Pituitary Gonadotropin and the Luteal Phase Following in Vitro Fertilization

“…The patients received daily, from day 3 to day 5 of the cycle, two ampules and on the following days according to individual reactions another ampule of Anthrogon® (43-85 lE FSH j. m., VEB Arzneimittelwerk Dresden, FSH/LH between 0.5-2.5.
