“…Neutron activation analysis (NAA) methods follow Glascock (1992) and Neff (2000). Methods of LA-ICP-MS generally follow Gratuze et al (2001), Speakman and Neff (2005), and Stoner and Glascock (2012). Finally, we employed a qualitative and semiquantitative assessment of the mineral composition of the pottery using a petrographic polarizing microscope.…”

“…It is the sum of all materials mixed together by the potter (temper, clay, natural inclusions) plus chemical alterations caused by use of the pottery and post-depositional diagenesis. In many cases, chemical data for a specific component of the ceramic paste may provide information on potting behavior or provenance that NAA cannot (Stoner and Glascock, 2012). While the potter can drastically alter the bulk chemistry of ceramics by adding or removing aplastic materials, the clay fraction itself is more difficult to alter.…”

“…The isotopes are then sent into the mass spectrometer, which sorts them on their mass-to-charge ratio (Neff 2003:23;Pollard and Heron 2008:56). This minimally destructive technique has been well tested for ceramic paste analysis (e.g., Beck and Neff 2007;Cochrane and Neff 2006;Eckert and James 2011;Golitko and Terrell 2012;Niziolek 2011;Stoner and Glascock 2012). Analysis was completed in the Mass Spectrometry Laboratory, housed within the Chemistry Department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH).…”

“…I analyzed by neutron activation analysis (NAA) one volcanic ash sample (Stoner 2003), collected by Pool (1990) for his doctoral work. Additionally, volcanic ash grains within 50 Coarse Orange sherds were targeted using laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) (see Stoner and Glascock 2012). These volcanic ash specimens displayed high concentrations of chromium, iron, nickel, manganese, vanadium, and scandium relative to the clays in the region.…”
