The Fornax Deep Survey with VST. II. Fornax A: A Two-phase Assembly Caught in the Act

Abstract: As part of the Fornax Deep Survey with the ESO VLT Survey Telescope, we present new g and r bands mosaics of the SW group of the Fornax cluster. It covers an area of 3 × 2 square degrees around the central galaxy NGC 1316. The deep photometry, the high spatial resolution of OmegaCam and the large covered area allow us to study the galaxy structure, to trace stellar halo formation and look at the galaxy environment. We map the surface brightness profile out to 33 arcmin (∼ 200 kpc ∼ 15R e ) from the galaxy cent… Show more

“…The red cross shows the cD galaxy NGC 1399 (see Iodice et al 2016) in the core of the Fornax cluster, and the blue cross shows the elliptical shell galaxy NGC 1316(see Iodice et al 2017) , which is the central galaxy of the Fornax-SW subcluster.…”

“…It covers a larger field-of-view than any of the previous Fornax surveys with deep multi-band observations, and has similar depth as the Next Generation Virgo Survey (Ferrarese et al 2012). The survey has already obtained several results, such as the discovery of an extended globular cluster population (D'Abrusco et al 2016), the characterization of the extended stellar halo of NGC 1399 (Iodice et al 2016), and the analysis of the merger system around NGC 1316 (Iodice et al 2017). Since we have deep data in g', r' and i'-bands, we can determine also the colors of the galaxies.…”

“…The radio emission is in red, as well as the background and foreground sources. The 3-colour composite image (from the gri bands) of the same field of view is taken from the Fornax Deep Survey (Iodice et al 2017).…”

“…We obtained the primary beam corrected images by dividing the continuum images by the primary beam images at the corresponding frequency. Figure 1 shows the radio emission of Fornax A seen by MeerKAT at 1.44 GHz overlaid on the deep photometric image from the Fornax Deep Survey (FDS) 3-colour composite (from the gri bands) (Iodice et al 2017). The average noise in the 2 • field of view is 16 µJy beam −1 .…”
