The fossil flora of the Dead Sea region, Jordan – A late Permian Garden of Delights

Abstract: The Umm Irna Formation, Jordan, holds one of the most peculiar late Permian plant–fossil assemblages worldwide. Over the last decades of field work, several localities close to the eastern shore of the Dead Sea have yielded a highly diverse ‘mixed flora’ of mesic to xeric environments encompassing elements that are typical either for different floral realms or for different time periods of Earth History. Taxa typical for particular floral realms include, e.g. Cathaysian gigantopterids and Lobatannularia, Euram… Show more

“…Lime/sandstone formations and fossils: In the Moab mountain areas, the succession of marl, sandstone, and limestone of cretaceous to tertiary age has left a portfolio of various impressive erosive structures through the epochs of water and wind erosion (Figure 8). Fossils (a) are abundant, and especially late Permian plants have been discovered in the Umm Irna sand-siltstone formation near the Dead Sea in the last decades [54]. Widespread sandstone erosion at the margins of wadis and on top of the mountains form sculpturelike structures (b-d).…”
