The Fourth Industrial Revolution – Smart Technology, Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and Algorithms: Industrial Psychologists in Future Workplaces

Abstract: In the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), STARA (smart technology, artificial intelligence, robotics, and algorithms) is predicted to replace a third of the jobs that exist today. Almost twice as many current work tasks will be handled by robots. It is forecast that by 2025, 85 million jobs may be displaced by a shift in the division of labor between humans and machines, while 97 million new roles may emerge that are more adapted to the new division of labor between humans, machines and algorithms. Industrial… Show more

“…In the twenty-first century, the implementation of cutting-edge technology linked to 4IR enables the realization of capabilities unimaginable in the 20th century, exemplified by innovations like voice-activated, virtual assistants, personalized content recommendations (e.g. Netflix) and facial recognition features (Oosthuizen, 2022). Klaus Schwab emphasizes that the onset of the 4IR era brings forth megatrends influencing the physical, digital and biological environments, disrupting established norms in human lifestyles, industrial practices and governmental policies (Ahmat and Hanipah, 2018).…”

“…[7] What's more, we are beginning to see how different AI algorithms and subsystems are being integrated to tackle increasingly complex problems. [8] This synergy among AI components has the potential to start a new industrial revolution, [9,10] but may also render a significant portion of existing jobs obsolete. [11,12] From the perspective of material science, this rapid development of artificial intelligence prompts a series of compelling questions.…”
