The Free Lateral Arm Flap—A Reliable Option for Reconstruction of the Forearm and Hand

Abstract: The free lateral arm flap is a very reliable option for defect coverage at the forearm and hand for small and medium size defects. A satisfactory aesthetic appearance, an excellent tissue quality, and frequent primary donor site closure are great advantages for selecting this flap.

“…Considering our results, the propeller flaps can be considered as a viable option to cover small- and medium-sized soft tissue defects of the upper extremities. Using propeller flaps on an upper extremity allows for good cosmetic and functional results in appropriately chosen patients, but complication rates remain important, particularly considering a complication rate for free flaps in the hands of trained surgical teams (Gupta et al, 2015; Miyamoto et al, 2015; Sauerbier et al, 2012). Despite increased interest in this procedure, it is a complex operation that requires experience and careful monitoring.…”

“…47 The flap can be raised with a skin paddle as large as 20 × 8 cm and a pedicle length up to 11 cm. 48 From a technical standpoint, the radial nerve must be identified and protected during the dissection, and microsurgical expertise is required for harvest. This flap has many advantages: it can be harvested form the ipsilateral Fig.…”
