The frequency of occurrence of Hepatocellular Carcinoma after direct antiviral therapy in Hepatitis C virus patients

Abstract: Objective: To study the frequency of occurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in hepatitis C virus patients treated with direct acting antiviral (DAA) agents. Methods: This hospital based cross-sectional study was conducted in Mayo Hospital, Lahore from June, 2016 to January, 2018. Total 300 patients with HCV genotype 3, selected via Non-Probability Purposive Sampling technique, without prior or concurrent history of HCC, were given DAA agents and were followed up for 6 months after completion of the… Show more

“…HCV infection is still a major cause of liver fibrosis, HCC, and liver failure [40] though patients with chronic hepatitis C are decreasing recently due to the fact that a number of promising new direct-acting antiviral agents (DAAs) have been developed in the past few years [41]. DM is closely associated with HCV-related outcomes mentioned above.…”

“…22 Whereas, a local study has also provided data against the evident efficacy outcomes, suggesting that the Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) was frequent among HCV patients treated with DAAs. 23 Limitations of the study: Although the study findings can be generalized to the whole population as it was multicenter including a large sample size but long-term follow-ups could enhance the knowledge regarding future implications of DAAs among the Pakistani population. Due to the design limitations, potential sources of bias can be information, sampling and interviewer bias and other limitation could be causality assessment of reported cases.…”
