The Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy - Fatigue (FACIT-Fatigue Subscale): Validity and Reliability of the Iranian Version

Abstract: Background: The aim of this study was to translate and validate the Functional Assessment of Chronic illnesses Therapy-Fatigue (FACIT-fatigue subscale) in Iran. Methods: The Persian version of the FACIT-fatigue scale was developed using the forward-backward translation method. The questionnaire was then presented to a consecutive sample of breast cancer patients (n = 208) attending the Iranian Center of Breast Cancer (ICBC). The reliability was assessed by internal consistency and test-retest using Cronbach's … Show more

“…Eden and Kunkel [21] validated the FACT-F with patients with head and neck cancer and reported good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha: 0.87) and test-retest reliability (r ¼ 0.95). Other psychometric studies using the instrument translated it into Spanish [61], French and Dutch [70], Japanese [40], Persian [71] and Portuguese [26,72]. Internal consistency of the translated scales ranged from between 0.79 and 0.94.…”

“…The Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Fatigue (FACIT-Fatigue) instrument was developed to measure fatigue in patients with cancer (Yellen et al, 1997). This instrument has been used worldwide in research on patients with cancer (Meysami et al, 2017) and other chronic diseases (Cella et al, 2019; Çinar & Yava, 2018; Eek et al, 2019). Although the items of this instrument were generated based on the multidimensional concept of fatigue (i.e., fatigue severity and its impact on functions), its multidimensionality has not been confirmed in prior studies and, thus, the use of its subscales has yet to be scientifically justified (Cella et al, 2011; Montan et al, 2018).…”

“…FACIT-F 40-items has been validated for use with a variety of cancer diagnoses and treatments; the original scale showed strong internal consistency (coefficient alpha 0.93e0.95) and good stability (test-retest, r ¼ 0.87). 6 Other studies using the instrument have translated it into Spanish, 8 French and Dutch, 9 Japanese, 10 Persian, 11 and Portuguese. 12,13 The internal consistency in the translated versions ranged from 0.79 to 0.94.…”
