The future of carbon dioxide removal must be transdisciplinary

Abstract: Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) represents a suite of pathways to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and mitigate climate change. The importance of CDR has expanded in recent years as emission reductions are not at pace to meet climate goals. This CDR-themed issue brings together diverse perspectives in order to identify opportunities to integrate across CDR disciplines, create a more holistic research agenda and inform how CDR is deployed. The individual papers within the issue discuss engineered and natu… Show more

“…This points to the importance of developing predictive tools, such as a reactive transport modeling framework [67,80], in order to predict the long-term fate of PC in soil over decades to millennial time scales. It is also recognized that such complex carbon removal approaches require the participation of transdisciplinary actors to enable wide dissemination of its potential and best practices, and equitable and sustainable implementation, which in turn is critical for the inclusion of this approach into relevant global climate policies [81].…”

“…Tracking the carbon flux in transgenic plants is critical for understanding the function of CDR-related genes. To investigate the impact of sucrose synthase on carbon allocation and carbon flow at the tissue and whole tree levels, the source leaves, phloem, developing wood, and roots of transgenic hybrid aspen (P. tremula × P. tremuloides) lines, with the expression of sucrose synthase gene repressed by RNAi, were analyzed using a combination of metabolite profiling, 13 CO 2 pulse labelling experiments, and long-term field tests [158]. These types of data can be very useful for metabolic modeling in the "learn" phase of a DBTL cycle.…”

“…CDR technologies are at an earlier stage of development than many clean energy technologies [ 11 , 12 ]. Although CDR is nascent, it has attracted new attention because clean energy technologies lag in adoption or deployment needed to meet the goals of climate change mitigation [ 13 ].…”

“…Today, capnography has been incorporated into intensive care units around the world, and routinely identifies issues in ventilated patients or those under anesthesia. For example, capnography waveforms and trends help identify overly rapid or inadequate breathing rates; blocked or obstructed breathing tubes; inappropriate ventilator settings; or when patients may be waking up from sedation and paralysis [73][74][75].…”
