The Future of Genomic Nursing Research

Abstract: Nurse scientists around the world are increasingly integrating genomics into their programs of research. Emerging international genomic initiatives, discoveries, and resources will provide rich opportunities for nurse scientists, as members of interdisciplinary teams, to address important biological, behavioral, social, and ethical questions. This evolving genomic nursing science will be necessary in practice, education, and policy in a time when rapid genomic discoveries are occurring.

“…With knowledge in pharmacogenomics, genetic testing, referrals, education, counseling, treatments, and research, health care professionals can take the lead in educating everyone involved about priorities and policies about privacy, the use of information and biological specimens, ethical conduct of research, at-risk individuals and groups, case management priorities, and educational and computer resources as these factors relate to the ICU setting. [74][75][76][77] Currently available data on obtaining informed consent are insufficient to adequately guide patients, surrogates, and health care professionals in the ICU, reflecting great challenges for the future. 18 New research on education and informed consent that make use of the power of computers and the Internet is especially needed.…”
