The future of near-field communication-based wireless sensing

Abstract: Near-field communication emerged as a high-security, wireless, short-range, data exchange technology nearly two decades ago; its ability to simultaneously transfer power and data between devices offers exciting opportunities for the design of miniature, battery-free and disposable sensing systems in health care and food quality monitoring.

“…In addition to capturing images and data acquisition, smartphones can share and store the data with the use of wireless connections via cloud servers in a secure and automated fashion. In addition to optical sensing, smartphones can couple to portable potentiostats via near field communication (NFC) technology for electrochemical detection of viruses ( Fig.1B ) [ 93 ]. NFC is able to transfer electrical power (∼10mW) to electronics and sensors without the need of batteries.…”

“…The cartoon in this figure is a sense of the future that we ought to avidly pursue in order to build a portfolio of detection modes as a part of our lifestyle (APPENDIX I, page 39, 1st paragraph). Near-field communications 594 (NFC) is one tool which may successfully contribute to build connectivity and functionalize the digital by design metaphor of IoT (internet of things). What if a NFC-card sensor (see Figure 21, on page 29) in a smartphone (when close to the individual, ~5 cm) could "sense" an infectious agent or a dysfunctional physiological molecule or volatile fatty acids (VFA) from a fish that once was fresh?…”
