The article discusses the current problems of reforming not only the domestic pension system, but also other countries (developed and developing). The dynamics of the main indicators of the functioning of the Pension Fund of the Russian Federation for 2018-2021, as well as forecast indicators for 2022 and for the planning period 2023 and 2024 are analyzed. The growth of the average pension index in the Russian Federation and the inflation index is compared. In order to assess the possibilities of improving the efficiency of the functioning of the pension system of the Russian Federation, the scientific works and opinions of various authors on the trajectory and features of the development of the pension system of the Russian Federation in recent years in the context of significant structural changes in this area are being investigated. The key problems of the functioning of the domestic pension system are summarized and systematized, including a complex formula for calculating pensions, the presence of parallel pension systems, the presence of a deficit of the Pension Fund of the Russian Federation, etc. The necessity of solving the existing problems for the realization of the principle of fairness in the framework of such important public financial relations as pension is emphasized. The ways of increasing the efficiency of the pension system of the Russian Federation, including by minimizing various macroeconomic risks, equalizing the retirement age for women and men, the maximum possible digitalization system, etc. are proposed.
