The relevance of the study is conditioned by the need for an in-depth investigation of the relationship between the imperatives of the circular economy and tourism and the identification of the role of this system in achieving sustainable environmental development of states. The purpose of the study is to describe global trends in tourism, substantiate the connection between tourism and the ideas of the circular economy, determine the prospects for digitalization of the tourism industry, present examples of the use of circular economy technologies in hospitality institutions, and provide information on national and international circular economy initiatives and their results. The leading method of this study is economic analysis, which was used to examine in detail the economic processes in the paradigm of circular economics, their regularities and consequences. The economic analysis established the influence of the circular economy on the development of trends in tourism. In addition, the following research methods were used: logical analysis, synthesis, deduction, observation, comparative, abstraction, and analysis of scientific literature. The study substantiates the connection between tourism and the ideas of the circular economy, determines the prospects for digitalization of the tourism industry, presents examples of the use of circular economy technologies in hospitality institutions, and provides information about national and international circular economy initiatives and their results. The materials of the study are of practical value for teachers and students of tourism, economic and environmental specialities, owners of tourism businesses and hospitality establishments, environmentalists, economists, members of environmental committees, environmental activists, politicians.

The world today is on the verge of exhausting its primary resources. In this situation the circular economy is undoubtedly a means of eliminating the shortage of raw materials faced by the Czech Republic and the whole of Europe. The development of the circular economy requires a change in how it is perceived by businesses as well as consumers. This paper is devoted to the perception and relationship between consumers and the circular economy. The potential offered by consumer behaviour as regards involvement in the circular economy lies in repairing, recycling and using products for other purposes, instead of discarding them in a landfill and then buying a new product. However, one fundamental prerequisite for this is that consumers decide to engage in the circular economy, a decision that can be motivated by economic conditions or personal incentives based on their own attitude to the environment. Two-level research was carried out in order to determine how the circular economy is perceived by consumers, where the qualitative method was first used to identify the concepts that consumers perceive as constituting the circular economy. The concepts were used to compile an original definition of the circular economy from the perspective of consumers. The concepts were subjected to quantitative data collection, identifying the importance of the concepts ascertained. The subsequent statistical evaluation served to detect differences in the perception of the importance of the identified concepts depending on consumer behaviour. The research shows that if consumers are aware of the importance of the circular economy, they themselves behave in a socially responsible manner. The assessment was intended to reveal differences in responses depending on the following demographic characteristics: age, gender, education and place of residence. It was apparent that only the respondents’ education is statistically significant, with consumers with a higher education assigning greater importance to the circular economy and thus being more likely to get involved in this concept.

Potentially dramatic changes in the organisation of the food system are being driven by both consumers and producers. Consumers are demanding higher quality produce and more direct connection to producers. For farmers, more extreme weather events and global competition are increasingly making industrial agriculture less economically viable. This paper explores how circular economy (CE) debates might contribute to, and support, the changes needed for a sustainable future. Full compliance with the three objectives of a CE identified by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation might help to describe a sustainable and circular food future. An analysis of the food system is therefore carried out to determine how food systems may be organised to (a) design out waste and pollution, (b) keep products and materials in use and (c) regenerate natural systems. One critique of CE debates is the failure to explore systemic shifts and possible futures that are not an extrapolation of current conditions. This analysis of the food system points to the need for a decentralised network of diverse, polyculture farms, each with integrated energy and water micro-grids, and managed at a local level. Co-locating food producers with food consumers, as much as possible, creates an integrated village system at the food-water-energy-housing nexus. Villages may then be networked to enable collaboration for sharing of rarer skills or the satisfaction of more complex needs and wants, forming a trading network of circular economy villages. It is therefore posited that the transition to a fully circular economy will require a paradigm shift-another agricultural revolution-the transition away from large-scale industrial agriculture to a decentralised network of circular food systems.
