The Gender Identity/Gender Dysphoria Questionnaire for Adolescents and Adults

Abstract: The present study reports on the construction of a dimensional measure of gender identity (gender dysphoria) for adolescents and adults. The 27-item gender identity/gender dysphoria questionnaire for adolescents and adults (GIDYQ-AA) was administered to 389 university students (heterosexual and nonheterosexual) and 73 clinic-referred patients with gender identity disorder. Principal axis factor analysis indicated that a one-factor solution, accounting for 61.3% of the total variance, best fits the data. Factor… Show more

“…Nevertheless, a recent study of the Gender Identity/Gender Dysphoria Questionnaire for Adolescents and Adults (GIDYQ-AA) showed that an item (No. 16,''wish or desire to be opposite sex'') with similar wording as the ASRI-4 GD item demonstrated a very high factor loading (0.93) and corrected item-total correlation (0.91) with the GIDYQ-AA as a whole (Deogracias et al, 2007), implying that this single item is core to and corresponds well to the whole construct of GD.…”

“…Five of the 11 items in the Paraphilic Interests Scale assess voyeurism, exhibitionism, or frotteurism, which might explain this otherwise unexpected finding. In addition, gender dysphoria, as measured by the GIDYQ-AA (Deogracias et al, 2007), was negatively predicted by the Anatomic Autogynephilia subscale over and above the other subscales. This finding was unexpected because anatomic autogynephilia has previously predicted gender dysphoria (Blanchard, 1993a, b).…”

“…Scores on this measure were calculated by taking the average reported frequency (1 = never to 5 = always) on the 27 items; thus, higher scores indicated higher levels of gender dysphoria. It should be noted, however, that in Deogracias et al (2007), lower scores on the GIDYQ-AA indicated higher levels of gender dysphoria. Thus, for ease in interpretation, we reversed the anchors on this 5-point scale, but in line with the original measure, Items 1, 13, and 27 were reverse-scored.…”
