The gender pay gap in the USA: a matching study

Abstract: This study examines the gender wage gap in the USA using two separate cross-sections from the Current Population Survey (CPS). The extensive literature on this subject includes wage decompositions that divide the gender wage gap into "explained" and "unexplained" components. One of the problems with this approach is the heterogeneity of the sample data. In order to address the difficulties of comparing like with like, this study uses a number of different matching techniques to obtain estimates of the gap. By … Show more

“…One author [58] presents a comprehensive review of literature on the gender pay gap especially focused on the USA, with detailed empirical evidence to show that some of the core issues have changed since the 1970s. In a very recent study [59], the gender pay gap in the USA is examined. The main conclusion implies that it might be better not to think of a single gender pay gap, but of a series of different pay gaps for different groups.…”

“…The aforementioned leads to carry out future research taking into consideration cultural values. This research acts as an eye opener for other researchers locally and internationally to consider covert variables in their quest to mitigate wage gaps and discrimination against female workforce as addressed by Schieder and Gould (2016) and Meara, Pastore and Webster (2020).…”
