The general specifications of the MEDITS surveys

Abstract: An international bottom trawl survey was designed from a European Commission´s initiative to produce biological data on the demersal resources in the Mediterranean Sea. Nine Mediterranean countries are associated in the programme, which covers all the trawlable areas along their coasts from 10 to 800 m depth. From 1994 to 2000, one survey was carried out each year, applying common standardized protocols. Seven yearly surveys have therefore been done, with a total of 7,500 stations prospected. “…Due to the gear design and sampling strategy, it is possible to conclude that the inter-annual variability in starry ray catches will likely reflect variations in abundance (Bertrand et al, 2002). Our results show welldefined persistence areas for this species which shows wider distribution patterns in respect to what observed from the MEDITS survey (Piccinetti et al, 2012).…”

“…The sampling gear used was a GOC73 trawl net, which has been used since 1994 for different surveys undertaken throughout the western Mediterranean and its efficiency for catching demersal species has already been tested (Bertrand et al, 2002). The average towing speed was 2.8 knots.…”

“…The new specimen of Protogrammus alboranensis was collected from a bottom trawl sampling carried out at 159 m depth during the MEDITS_ES05_17 survey that took place around the Balearic Islands in June 2017 (for more specifications on sampling and design see Bertrand et al 2002) (Fig. 1).…”
