The Genetics of Racing Performance in Arabian Horses

Abstract: Arabian horses are commonly believed to be one of the oldest and most influential horse breeds in the world. The high financial benefits obtained from races tend to search for genetic markers strongly correlated with the results achieved. To date, the modern approaches such as transcriptome, miRNAome, and metabolome analyses have been used to investigate the genetic background of racing performance as well as endurance capacity in Arabians. The analysis of polymorphisms at the genome level has also been applie… Show more

“…Tunisian blood horses showed lower speed (13.06m/s); however, they still fell within the reference range. These findings were described inprevious studies (Paksoy and Ünal 2010;Paksoy et al, 2018). Such results indicate significant differences in effort and various racing predispositions observed in racing breeds, which are most likely conditioned by different genetic backgrounds (Ropka-Molik et al, 2019). This would confirm what is known by professionals in this sector that the occidental horse is more successful in races than the Tunisian and we will be tempted to assert the improving role of the occidental horse.…”

“…PDK4 and COX4I2 single nucleotide polymorphisms are also implicated in racing performance in Quarter Horses 62 and others are linked to endurance performance in Arabian Horses (reviewed in Ref. 63). Until recently, the signalling mechanisms responsible for the adaptations that occur in equine skeletal muscle after single bouts and the accumulated benefits from regular training were poorly understood.…”

“…Speed is a fundamental trait to evaluate for horses competing in a race, and it has been widely used in racing horses (the classical “time per km”) [ 14 ]. Other common traits are the placing and the annual or career earnings [ 15 ]. Elite Arabian racing mares and stallions usually produce elite racing offspring, and this relationship is observed through many generations [ 16 ].…”

“…Elite Arabian racing mares and stallions usually produce elite racing offspring, and this relationship is observed through many generations [ 16 ]. Many studies were carried out to estimate the heritability value of the “performance” measured by different traits in many racing breeds, such as Thoroughbred, Arabian, and trotter horses [ 6 , 14 , 15 ]. However, race speed has never been rated before in Turkey, as well as finish time, position, and earnings.…”
