The genome anatomy of Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis VD57 a highly virulent strain causing Caseous lymphadenitis

Abstract: Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis strain VD57 (Cp_VD57), a highly virulent, nonmotile, non-sporulating, and a mesophilic bacterium, was isolated from a goat’s granulomatous lesion in the municipality of Juazeiro, Bahia State, Brazil. Here, we describe a set of features of the strain, together with the details of its complete genome sequence and annotation. The genome comprises of a 2.5 Mbp long, single circular genome with 2,101 protein-coding genes, 12 rRNA, 49 tRNA and 47 pseudogenes and a G + C content of … Show more

“…The respective percentages of the predicted coding regions are: 86.16% on MEX1, 86.33% on MEX9, 85.94% on MEX25 , 86.66% on MEX29 , 83.06% on MEX30 and 86.64% on MEX31 . These genome sizes and the G + C content (~ 52%) are consistent with other C. pseudotuberculosis studies [ 2 , 6 , 52 ]. There are 64 predicted RNA genes in strains of the biovar ovis (MEX1, MEX9, MEX25 and MEX29 ) and 66 from the biovar equi ( MEX30 and MEX31 ).…”

“…The manifestation of the infection depends on the host [ 1 4 ]. This bacterium causes significant economic loss to animal production all over the world due to reduced production of wool, milk and meat, carcass condemnation, as well as the death of infected animals [ 4 6 ]. C. pseudotuberculosis can also affect humans, causing distinct kinds of lymphadenitis.…”

“…pseudotuberculosis is also the causative agent of caseous lymphadenitis in small ruminants. However, the strains that cause this disease are grouped into another biovar called ovis [ 5 ]. At first, the distinction between the two biovars, ovis and equi , was based mainly on the nitrate reduction capability and results of restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLP) [ 6 , 7 ].…”

“…All the chemicals and other reagents were purchased from Sigma-Aldrich (St. Louise, MO, USA) unless otherwise stated. Strain VD57 of C. pseudotuberculosis was used in this study, which has been previously used as the virulent reference strain [ 6 , 7 ]. The bacteria were routinely maintained in Brain Heart Infusion (BHI) broth at 37 °C.…”
