The genome sequence of Samia ricini, a new model species of lepidopteran insect

Abstract: Bombyx mori has long been the predominant model organism in Lepidoptera and has allowed researchers to make remarkable discoveries. For example, Toyama (1906) confirmed Mendel's laws of heredity to be valid for B. mori and this was the first case showing the validity of Mendel's laws for an animal species. When Beadle and Tatum (1941) proposed the "one gene-one enzyme hypothesis", Kikkawa (1941) almost simultaneously reached a similar concept by using egg colour mutants of B. mori. There is no doubt that the a… Show more

“…Long interspersed nuclear elements (LINEs) are the second most abundant repeat category with >39 million bases (7.23%), followed by DNA transposons and rolling circles and long terminal repeats (LTRs), which have >15 million (2.82%) and >11 million bases (2.10%) respectively. Percent composition of repeats and predominance of LINEs were similar to both the S. ricini and Bombyx mori genome assemblies ( Lee et al 2021 ).…”

“…We compared the accuracy of TSEBRA with EVM, one of the most cited combiner tools to date. EVM was previously used to combine BRAKER with other predictions [ 41 ], to combine BRAKER2 predictions with RNA-seq evidence [ 42 , 43 ] or other RNA-seq based predictions [ 44 ], and even for combining multiple BRAKER predictions [ 45 ]. Still, it is not the most suitable task for EVM to create a BRAKER-only combination.…”

“…A total of 155 scaffolds of S. ricini genome assembly ( 44 ), 171 159 de novo assemblies of RNA-seq reads, 78 839 ORFs predicted from RNA-seq assemblies and 20 320 cDNA ends ( 41 ) were installed. The RNA-seq assemblies and predicted ORFs were annotated with GO terms, blast results against nr and their transcript levels (RNA-seq assemblies only).…”

“…Furthermore, S. ricini (Eri silkmoth), a gigantic and polyphagous saturniid moth, is the almost fully domesticated saturniid species. The genome sequence of these species was recently determined by our collaborators ( 44 ).…”
