“…Additionally, the sequence of an uncultured fungus clone, MAC09GadID (GenBank: JN890075), revealed by a Blast search (Altschul et al 1997) as a closely related sequence, was added to the LSU dataset. GenBank accession numbers of the sequences used for the LSU dataset (Boekhout et al 1995;Begerow et al 1997Begerow et al , 2007Piepenbring et al 1999Piepenbring et al , 2002Fell et al 2000;Castlebury et al 2005;Hendrichs et al 2005;Stoll et al 2005;Vánky et al 2006Vánky et al , 2008aBauer et al 2007Bauer et al , 2008González et al 2007;Matheny et al 2007;McGuire et al 2010;Vánky and Lutz 2011;Lutz et al 2012a, b;McTaggart et al 2012;Piątek et al 2013) are given in Fig. 1.…”

“…The anamorphic stage of this fungus is reported in an area of Atlantic rain forest of northeast Brazil associated with the endemic species Canistrum improcerum (Martinelli et al 2008), and in a small area in southeast Brazil associated with the endemic and endangered species Vriesea minarum (Versieux 2011;Gomes et al 2015). Considering the usually high level of host specificity of smut fungi in the teleomorphic stage (e.g., Hendrichs et al 2005;Piątek et al 2011Piątek et al , 2013Piątek et al , 2016Li et al 2017), it is not likely to find the teleomorph of P. tillandsiae outside its current area of host distribution. Future studies should question whether the anamorphic stage is indeed restricted to C. improcerum and V. minarum or if it may be also associated with other bromeliads or other habitats.…”

“…Consequently, the smut on the royal fern was transferred into its own genus, Exoteliospora, and Ustilago marina, growing on the marine Eleocharis parvula, also deserved to be excluded from Ustilago, and was, therefore, generically renamed as Parvulago by Bauer et al (2007). The female flowers of Carex and of other cyperaceous plants infected by Anthracoidea species, were long lasting objects of intensive collecting and studies in our group (Hendrichs et al 2005), which required also partial re-investigations of the main host itself (Hendrichs et al 2004). Prillinger et al (2009) reported the new Schizonella caricis-atratae, growing on Carex atrata in Austria.…”
