The genus Cymbopleura (Cymbellales, Bacillariophyta) from high altitude freshwater habitats, Everest National Park, Nepal, with the description of two new species.

Abstract: Abstract:As part of a study on the diatom flora of the Gokyo Valley, Everest National Park, Nepal, eleven species of Cymbopleura (Bacillariophyta), including two new species, Cymbopleura gokyoensis jüttner et Van de VijVer sp. nov. and Cymbopleura emoda jüttner et Van de VijVer sp. nov., were investigated using light and electron microscopy. Some taxa could not be identified with certainty using the currently available literature due to small differences in valve dimensions, raphe structure and striation patte… Show more

“…This region alone houses more than 1500 endemic plant species (Myers et al 2000). Studies on the diatom flora of the Himalayan region have been confined to Nepal (Jüttner et al 2000(Jüttner et al , 2004(Jüttner et al , 2010a(Jüttner et al , 2010b(Jüttner et al , 2011(Jüttner et al , 2017(Jüttner et al , 2018Van de Vijver et al 2011;Krstić et al 2013), Tibet and China (Mereschkowsky 1906;Kociolek 1992;Huizhong & Jiayou 2000;Li et al 2010aLi et al , 2010bGong & Li 2011;Hu et al 2013;Gong et al 2015;Jiang et al 2018;Liao & Li 2018). Studies on the freshwater diatoms from the Indian Territory of the region are limited to a few recent records (Das et al 2018;Wadmare et al 2019).…”

“…A significant contribution was made by Hirano (1955) reporting 69 diatom species from Phewa lake, Kaski; Ankhu khola and Luitel bhanjyang, Gorkha; Tandi khola, Pisang and Thaple Himal, Manang; and Kali Gandaki and Tukuche moor, Mustang. Later on, contribution on diatom of Nepal was made by various workers (Hirano, 1969(Hirano, , 1984Suxena and Venkateswarlu, 1968;Nakanishi, 1986;Aryal and Lacoul, 1996;Jüttner et al, 1996Jüttner et al, , 2003Jüttner et al, , 2010Jüttner et al, , 2011Habib, 1997;Cantonati et al, 2001;Van de Vijver, 2011;Krstić et al, 2012Krstić et al, , 2013. “…Recently there have appeared a few reports of new species and new combinations from India, particularly from biodiversity hotspots like the Himalayas and Western Ghats. Some of these recently described species belong to the genera Achnanthidium Kützing (1844: 75;Wojtal et al 2010, Cymbopleura (Krammer 1982: 20) Krammer (1999: 292;Van de Vijver et al 2011), Gomphonema Ehrenberg (Jüttner et al 2004, Oricymba Jüttner, Krammer, Cox, Van de Vijver & Tuji (Jüttner et al 2010: 408), Pleurosigma W.
