The Genus Dasymaschalon (Annonaceae) in Thailand

Abstract: A comprehensive taxonomic revision of the genus Dasymaschalon (Annonaceae) in Thailand is presented. Twelve species are recognized, including five that are newly described and one new nomenclatural combination, viz. D. acuminatum sp. nov., D. angustifolium sp. nov., D. dasymaschalum , D. echinatum sp. nov., D. filipes , D. glaucum , D. grandiflorum sp. nov., D. lomentaceum , D. macrocalyx , D. obtusipetalum sp. nov., D. sootepense , and D. wallichii comb. nov. “…Dasymaschalon Dalla Torre & Harms is unusual in possessing only three petals per flower; these petals, which are homologous to the outer petals of other Annonaceae, are apically connivent to form a pollination chamber (Wang, Chalermglin & Saunders, 2009; Saunders, 2010). Many species superficially appear to be cleistogamous, leading some authors (e.g.…”

“…Dasymaschalon is a much smaller genus, with only ca. 30 species which are endemic to tropical sub-tropical Asia (Wang et al 2009). The genus consists of small trees (rarely climbers), with indument of simple hairs (Li et al 2011).…”

“…Dasymaschalon was included within Desmos, but is supported by molecular studies and is easily distinguished morphologically by the absence of an inner whorl of petals (Wang et al 2009). To our knowledge, information is scarce on the chemical constituents of many of the Dasymaschalon species.…”
