Aim The species–area relationship (SAR) is one of the most distinctive biogeographic patterns, but global comparisons of the SARs between island and mainland are lacking for microbial taxa. Here, we explore whether the form of the SAR and the drivers of species richness, including area, environmental heterogeneity, climate and physico‐chemistry, differ between islands and similarly sized areas on mainland, referred to as continental area equivalents (CAEs). Location Global. Taxon Stream benthic diatoms. Methods We generated CAEs on six continental datasets and examined the SARs of CAEs and islands (ISAR). Then, we compared CAEs and islands in terms of total richness and richness of different ecological guilds. We tested the factors contributing to richness in islands and CAEs with regressions. We used structural equation models to determine the effects of area versus environmental heterogeneity, climate and local conditions on species richness. Results We found a non‐significant ISAR, but a significant positive SAR in CAEs. Richness in islands was related to productivity. Richness in CAEs was mainly dependent on area and climate, but not directly on environmental heterogeneity. Species richness within guilds exhibited inconsistent relationships with island isolation and area. Main conclusions Ecological and evolutionary processes shaping diatom island biogeography do not depend on area at the worldwide scale probably due to the presence of distinct species pool across islands. Conversely, area was an important driver of diatom richness in continents, and this effect could be attributed to dispersal. Continents had greater richness than islands, but this was a consequence of differences in environmental conditions such as specific island climatic conditions. We stress the need for more island data on benthic diatoms, particularly from archipelagos, to better understand the biogeography of this most speciose group of algae.

The Utility of Macroecological Rules for Microbial Biogeography

Macroecological rules have been developed for plants and animals that describe large-scale distributional patterns and attempt to explain the underlying physiological and ecological processes behind them. Similarly, microorganisms exhibit patterns in relative abundance, distribution, diversity, and traits across space and time, yet it remains unclear the extent to which microorganisms follow macroecological rules initially developed for macroorganisms. Additionally, the usefulness of these rules as a null hypothesis when surveying microorganisms has yet to be fully evaluated. With rapid advancements in sequencing technology, we have seen a recent increase in microbial studies that utilize macroecological frameworks. Here, we review and synthesize these macroecological microbial studies with two main objectives: (1) to determine to what extent macroecological rules explain the distribution of host-associated and free-living microorganisms, and (2) to understand which environmental factors and stochastic processes may explain these patterns among microbial clades (archaea, bacteria, fungi, and protists) and habitats (host-associated and free living; terrestrial and aquatic). Overall, 78% of microbial macroecology studies focused on free living, aquatic organisms. In addition, most studies examined macroecological rules at the community level with only 35% of studies surveying organismal patterns across space. At the community level microorganisms often tracked patterns of macroorganisms for island biogeography (74% confirm) but rarely followed Latitudinal Diversity Gradients (LDGs) of macroorganisms (only 32% confirm). However, when microorganisms and macroorganisms shared the same macroecological patterns, underlying environmental drivers (e.g., temperature) were the same. Because we found a lack of studies for many microbial groups and habitats, we conclude our review by outlining several outstanding questions and creating recommendations for future studies in microbial ecology.

Numerous species of Eunotia Ehrenb., widely distributed in the world flora, prefer acidic, dystrophic or oligotrophic freshwater habitats with low conductivity and usually occur in epiphytic or epilithic hydrotopes. In Ukraine, only 32 species and eight varieties of Eunotia were known until this study. For the first time, 9 more species have been recorded mainly from the Cheremsky Nature Reserve, located in Ukrainian Polissya. New findings include 2 species widely distributed in the world flora on most continents and 7 rare species known from several locations, among them E.genuflexa, E.jarensis and E.ruzickae, which are probably European endemics as they have not been reported from other continents. For the present time in the Cheremsky Nature Reserve, the 20 species recorded here, the highest species richness of Eunotia in Ukraine, bring the total number of Eunotia in Ukraine to 41 species, which comprises only 7% of Eunotia species in the world flora. This is indirect evidence of insufficient investigation of the wetlands in Ukraine where Eunotia usually is represented with high species richness. Several definitions are suggested to describe morphological features that are peculiar to the diatom frustule particular to the Eunotia species. The genus Eunotia possesses a mirror-symmetric, mantle-offset, brevisslit raphe system, which may or may not have terminal raphe fissures. Morphological analysis provided in this study revealed the absence of terminal raphe fissures for many species of Eunotia. Instead, the distal ends of the raphe slits finish on the outer valve surface by funnel holes, sometimes pore-like ones, connected with the helictoglossae. However, in the literature those distal ends of the raphe slits were described erroneously as terminal raphe fissures. For the first time different types of raphe system are grounded. Two species Eunotiaimplicata Nörpel-Schempp et al. in Alles et al. and Eunotiaincisa W. Smith ex Gregory were lectotypified.
