The geographic distribution of onchocerciasis in the 20 participating countries of the African Programme for Onchocerciasis Control: (2) pre-control endemicity levels and estimated number infected

Abstract: BackgroundThe original aim of the African Programme for Onchocerciasis Control (APOC) was to control onchocerciasis as a public health problem in 20 African countries. In order to identify all high risk areas where ivermectin treatment was needed to achieve control, APOC used Rapid Epidemiological Mapping of Onchocerciasis (REMO). REMO involved spatial sampling of villages to be surveyed, and examination of 30 to 50 adults per village for palpable onchocercal nodules. REMO has now been virtually completed and … Show more

“…The burden of disease caused by OAE is expected to be high. It is currently estimated that 36 million people are infected with OV [10]. If we consider that OV is poorly controlled in 30% of infected individuals, and that 1% of those develop epilepsy (equivalent to the approximate excess prevalence of epilepsy over non-onchocerciasis-endemic areas), the number of excess cases of epilepsy due to onchocerciasis could be as high as 100 000.…”

“…The disease is endemic in 30 African countries, in Yemen and in localized foci in four Latin American countries. About 120 million people are at risk worldwide, with 99 % of them living in Africa, and 37 million were infected in 1995, when the African Programme for Onchocerciasis Control (APOC) was launched [1, 2]. …”

“…9,10 They threaten almost one-third of the world's population, the most numerous incidents being recorded in over 100 Tropical and developing countries and territories, Figure 1. 11,12 Malaria, for example, was reported by the WHO, to be responsible for approximately 214 million sickness cases and 438,000 deaths globally in 2017. 13 The African region recorded the most death-related cases, especially amongst infants below the age of 5 and pregnant women.…”
