The Georeferencing of Old Cartography in Geographic Information Systems (GIS): Review, Analysis and Comparative Study of Georeferencing Software

Abstract: Contemporary organizations have faced the growing management of cartographic documentation, some of them of heritage interest. There are numerous institutions that are digitizing, georeferencing and publishing their historical cartography. The motivation of this research is to facilitate the choice of the most appropriate software to perform these tasks. This article carries out the critical review and analysis of four Geographic Information Systems (GIS) of full significance today. After systematizing the gen… Show more

“…As part of the evaluation process, we tried to work with the most accurate historical source material so as to be able to work with the historical state of the site based on georeferenced historical maps. The third stage focuses on working with maps in the ESRI ArcGIS 10.3 program [32]. The final output is to translate this more than 300-year-old Marsigli's map that shows no geographic coordinates into a real-time map.…”

“…Hackeloeer, Klasing, Krisp and Meng [64] or Krejčí [65] present a review of methods and applications in georeferencing. Different georeferencing software is compared in a work of Katchadourian and Alberich-Pascual [32]. Worth mentioning are also Molnár [66] or Brovelli and Minghini [67] with their polynomialbased approach, or Cajtlhaml [68] who proposed a new solution on the basis of adjustment of transformation coefficients of all map sheets with the conditions that define the edge continuity.…”

“…Transformation models are calculated from a set of ground control points (GCPs) that link the map to be georeferenced with a map of reference already georeferenced 22,23 . They are categorized into two main categories : global and local [24][25][26] .…”
