The site of Trimingham is situated where the Cromer Ridge, the largest topographic feature of northeast Norfolk, transects the coastline, providing an opportunity to study the ridge's internal structure and stratigraphy. It can be demonstrated that there were two glacial advances at this site, with an intervening phase of proglacial lake sedimentation that lasted for approximately 2000 years (Glacial Lake Trimingham). A detailed investigation of the sedimentology of the lake sediments enabled a facies reconstruction showing spatial and temporal changes within this lake. Ice‐sheet retreat is indicated by an upward change from proximal to distal varve sequences, and a general shallowing of the lake followed by the deposition of marl‐rich sediments and then aeolian and/or beach sands. A subsequent readvance of the ice‐sheet is marked by further deposition of varved sediments and then by till deposition. This site provides an opportunity to study enviromental change over a known time period within the Anglian glaciation. It is suggested that this lake formed as the result of two ice‐sheets coalescing and may be associated with the diachronously formed North Sea lake(s).

The timing and extent of late Middle Pleistocene glaciations in England and the southern North Sea are controversial topics. The recent Trent Valley Palaeolithic Project uncovered evidence for a post‐Anglian, pre‐Devensian glaciation that affected much of central and eastern England; the Wragby Till of Lincolnshire is associated with this glacial event, attributed here to Marine Oxygen Isotope Stage (MIS) 8. Coeval glacigenic deposits in the Middle Trent suggest that both western and eastern lobes of MIS 8 ice reached the Derby area. These various deposits have been assigned previously to MIS 12, 10 or 6, although the last can be excluded for the Wragby Till, which is overlain by Trent terrace deposits assigned to MIS 7 (from biostratigraphy and amino acid dating). The disposition of these glacigenic deposits within the landscape, particularly in relation to terrace deposits of the ancestral River Trent, and the absence of MIS 11 and 9 deposits within the footprint of the glaciation also provide compelling evidence. At its maximum extent in eastern England the MIS 8 ice reached the Peterborough area; identifying its extension (or otherwise) into areas such as north‐west Norfolk and the West Midlands requires further work.

The lowland region of north Norfolk contains some of the best preserved evidence for glacial deposition during the Middle Pleistocene in northwest Europe.Despite the importance of these deposits, there is limited chronological control and it is debated whether they belong to a single glaciation, equated to the Anglian glaciation (Marine Isotope Stage 12), or represent deposition over a number of Middle Pleistocene cold stages. In order to develop an improved chronology for glaciation in this region, we obtained 18 samples for optical stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating from glacial outwash facies. Samples of coarse-grained quartz sand were measured using the SAR (single aliquot regenerative-dose) protocol. The low radioactive isotope concentrations in sediments of this region enable the traditionally accepted age limit of luminescence dating to be extended. The form of the dose response curves, pre-heat plateaux tests, and dose recovery experiments also indicate that laboratory doses can be reliably measured in these samples. Age overestimation due to partial bleaching is thought to be insignificant. The OSL ages suggest that the glacial sediments studied were deposited during MIS 12 rather than in different post MIS 12 stages.
