The global impact of IBS: time to think about IBS-specific models of care?

Abstract: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a prevalent functional gastrointestinal (GI) disorder that can significantly erode the quality of life (QoL) of sufferers and places a major cost burden on healthcare services. This paper reviews the literature on the impact of IBS on healthcare services and society, including a recent report on the subject, in order to formulate a plan for the future. “…IBS is common with a global prevalence that varies from 1.1% to 35.5% depending on the diagnostic criteria and study methodology . In addition, IBS has a heterogeneous presentation and is associated with significant morbidity . The pathophysiology of IBS has traditionally been attributed to dysfunction within the colon, while some evidence exists to implicate the small intestine; it likely has a multifactorial etiology.…”

“…Due to symptom severity and the significant impact on quality of life, IBS may account for 25%‐30% of all primary healthcare visits and causes both work‐related absenteeism and presenteeism . In the UK, it is estimated that IBS accounts for 0.1% of the total National Health Service cost, and in Denmark, the median cost due to absenteeism was $1508 per patient per year in 2013 . Our previous data indicate that the positive effect of SNM for IBS is maintained after at least 3 years, and SNM is estimated to be cost‐effective from a 7‐year perspective .…”
