The Global, Regional, National Burden of Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma (1990–2019) and Predictions to 2035

Abstract: Objective. The aim of the study is to provide the burden of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) in 21 regions, 204 countries, and territories from 1990 to 2019 by age, sex, and sociodemographic index (SDI) and to predict the global burden of cSCC to 2035. Methods. We use estimates from 2019 Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study to conduct the analysis and prediction. The burden of cSCC was estimated for 21 regions, 204 countries, and territories from 1990 to 2019, through a systematic analysis of incidence… Show more

“…cSCC occurs with such prevalence that it is excluded from mandatory reporting in most nations, undermining accurate epidemiological evaluation 1 . Globally, cSCC is estimated to occur at an age‐adjusted incidence of 30.1 per 100 000 2 . However, there is notable regional specificity.…”

“…The overall aggressiveness across cSCC patients may seem relatively reduced compared to other cancers, as the cSCC metastasis rate varies between 2 and 9.9% in the immunocompetent population, with a 2.8% chance of dying because of this disease; when considering the large number of individuals affected, one can easily observe that the number of deaths caused by cSCC is very high [7,8]. Thus, the number of deaths caused by cSCC rivals the number of deaths from melanoma [6].…”

“…8,9 The rising incidence of cSCC has a high economic burden. 2,10,11 The COVID-19 pandemic severely impacted public and private healthcare systems globally. 12 To reduce COVID-19 mortality, countries implemented lockdowns, promoted stay at home campaigns, and advised vulnerable populations such as the elderly or immunocompromised to shield themselves.…”
